Ronnie's artist statement:
Chair Studies
I have a long-standing interest/fascination with chairs. Maybe it’s because they are both functional and, at their best, sculptural objects. There’s something about an empty chair that feels like an unfinished story.
In my walks around Oakland and Berkeley, I often see chairs in unexpected places– In a yard, between houses, on the sidewalk, a garden, or even under a highway overpass. Some have clearly been discarded and relocated and others seem to be on a second or third life from where they started. Again, there’s always an implied story, a narrative that I can only guess at.
I chose to paint these chairs in the hopes of representing a bit of the life story that their circumstances suggested. I think of these as portraits, notes, stories and sketches.
